Guide

Practise the roadbook before the rally

Roadbook reading is a skill you can build long before a training or a race. Five ways riders practise between seasons.

1 · The lexicon

Learn the symbols first

Every roadbook box combines a distance, a drawing and abbreviations. Learn the FIM symbols for junctions, dangers and terrain until you read them without thinking. The Dinaric Rally guide Rally raid roadbook navigation explains the layout and shows the symbols.

2 · Draw your own

Make a roadbook of your local trails

Record a loop you know, then build its roadbook in software such as Rally Navigator. Drawing junctions forces you to see them the way a roadbook author does. Ride the loop with your own roadbook and note every place where the drawing did not match the ground.

3 · Calibrate

Tripmeter and CAP

A roadbook is only as accurate as your tripmeter. Practise calibrating it over a measured distance, correcting it at known points, and riding a CAP heading on open ground where there is no track to follow. Small errors add up over a 300 km stage.

4 · Ride a virtual rally

Roadbooks on your phone

Full stages, ridden on your own dates with the Terra Pirata app.

Test your set-up first on the free test route in the app. There is no support on these rides, so ride within your limits.

5 · Get feedback

Train with an instructor

Practising alone builds habits, good and bad. A week of roadbooks with an instructor shows which ones to keep. The Roadbook Rally Bootcamp gives you six roadbooks on Dinaric Rally stages, daily debriefs and one-to-one feedback after key sections.
