Clutch, rear brake and balance at walking pace. Most drops on big bikes happen below 10 km/h, on a turn or a stop on loose ground.
2. Standing on gravel
Weight on the pegs, knees on the tank, loose arms. The bike steers with your feet as much as with the bars.
3. Climbs and descents
Choosing the line and the gear before the slope, keeping traction on the way up and controlling speed on the way down without locking the front.
4. Obstacles
Rocks, steps, ruts and water crossings: what to look at, when to lift the front and when to go around.
Around the bike
When the ride stops
5. Picking the bike up
A technique that works with luggage on, on a slope and when you are tired, without hurting your back.
6. Recovery
Getting yourself and the bike out of mud, a ditch or a river, with what you carry and with help from the group.
7. Roadside mechanics
Finding and fixing the faults riders meet most often: punctures, broken levers, electrical faults, a bike that will not start.
Before and after
The trip itself
8. Packing and bike setup
Where the weight goes, what stays at home and how luggage changes the bike off-road. Setting levers, bars and suspension for standing.
9. Camping and food
Sleeping in a tent, cooking and staying comfortable outdoors after a full day of riding.
10. First aid, rescue and calm decisions
First aid, rope-based self-rescue and making decisions when the plan falls apart. Taught by a search and rescue professional.
Training
Four days in the Dinaric Mountains
Adventure Riding Training covers these skills over four days, 1–4 May 2027 or on dates of your choice for groups of four or more: more than 28 hours on the bike and 10 hours of lectures, based in Knin. Lighter bikes and first steps off-road are covered in Off-Road Riding Training.
Thinking of a rally on an adventure bike? Big bikes race in the same Rally class at the Dinaric Rally; the Roadbook Rally Bootcamp adds the navigation.
